Laos cycling tours >> Cycling adventure northern Laos  10days / 9 nights

Itinerary

       

Day 1

Fly to Bangkok and connecting fly to Chiengrai meet local guide at the airport in Chiengrai and transfer to the border at Chiengkong, after immigration formalities cross the border to Laos, stay over night at Huayxai.

Ride: no cycling

Meal: D

Accommodation: guesthouse

Day 2

Chiengkhong (Thailand) – Viengphoukha (Laos)

            After breakfast we transfer first 3o km, the rest of 90 km we ride through the hill tribe villages of Kamu and Lolanders. Lunch in the shade under the tree by the road wherever we feel hungry, it is prepared by our guide and helpers, we arrive a small town of Viengphoukha late afternoon.  

Ride:  90 km on good quality asphalt road.

Accommodation: primitive guesthouse (no electricity)

Meal:  B / L/D

Day 3

Viengphoukha - Luangnamtha

  We have breakfast at local restaurant; our guide will help the restaurant to prepare for the group. Riding today is only 51 km, the road today is undulating, and it is not as hard as yesterday, today we also ride through hill tribe villages with a lot of kids run out from their houses and say SABAIDEE in Lao language that means hello in English. We arrive and have lunch in Luangnamtha at noon.   

Ride:  51 km on good quality asphalt road.

Accommodation: boat landing guesthouse (nice bungalows with private bath room and 24 h electricity)

Day 4

Luangnamtha - Muangsing - Luangnamtha

  Ride from guesthouse to a small town of Muangsing, it is close to the border to China, today’s ride will take us through the most jungle covered mountains anywhere on the route, the road crosses two valleys Luangnamtha and Muangsing, so there will be some climbing involved to leave them behind, lunch in the restaurant, see hill tribe villages and drive back to Luangnamtha, stay over night at boat landing guesthouse.

Ride: 60 km on good quality asphalt road

Accommodation: boat landing guesthouse

Day 5

Luangnamtha – Udomxai

  Transfer the first 43 km from guesthouse to the junction to China, ride 84 km to Udomxai. Today we ride through the villages of Thai Lu, Kmue, and Hmong ethnic groups, the more variety of these groups throughout the hill of the north of the country is definitely one of the highlight of this trip. Lunch is prepared by our guide and helpers so we decide when we feel hungry and we will have by the road under the tree. We arrive Udomxai late afternoon.

Ride: 84 km on good quality asphalt road

Accommodation: Litthavixai guesthouse with private bathroom and 24 h electricity

Meal: B / L / D

Day 6

Udomxai – Muangkua

  After breakfast, we head west in direction to Vietnam border, you should be feeling refreshed, although it is a gradual down hill it is up hill in some places but do not worry it is not too steep. There are some excellent photo opportunities of the friendly Khmu tribe and their families. Lunch is prepared by our guide and helpers so we can find a nice spot for lunch stop by the stream. Today is a great day riding. 

 Ride from Udomxai to Muangkua, stay over night at Xernaly hotel

Ride: 103 km

Accommodation: Xernaly hotel (with private bath room but power by generator from 6 – 10 pm).

Meal: B / L / D

Day 7

Muangkua – Nongkiaw

          After breakfast we get on the long tail boat on Nam Ou River. The boat journey takes us down one of the most beautiful stretches of all the rivers of Laos. The lime stone mountains become steeper as further south we go and the amazing landscape passing by in a quiet and relaxing place after 4 hours we arrive Muang Ngoi village (it was the capital district of LuangPrabang province controlled by communist before 1975 during Indochina war) lunch at the restaurant. After lunch continue another an hour to Nongkiew. Stay over night at BanLao bungalows (I recommend to stay and eat with local people)

By boat to Nongkiaw for 5 h, stay over night at Banlao bungalows

Ride: no ride

Accommodation: Banlao bungalows with private bath rooms and 24 h electricity.

Meal: B,L,D

Day 8

NONGKIAW – LUANGPRABANG

 After breakfast we ride from Nongkiew to the junction after 30 km we turn left to LuangPrabang, transfer last 30 km to LuangPrabang.

Ride: 110 km

Accommodation: Ancient Luangprabang hotel.

Meal: B / L / D

Day 9

LuangPrabang

            Option 1: After having breakfast we cycle 30 km to water fall and have lunch there.

                            Ride: = 30 km.

            Option 2: Haft day cycle around town to discover the small city of Luangprabang and visit the oldest temples in the town and cycle 4 km out of town to visit handicraft paper and the weaving village then come back to the town for lunch at nice restaurant by the Mekong River, after noon free

Ride = 12 Km

            option 3: Free.

Meal: B / L

Accommodation: Ancient Luangprabang hotel
